A Voyage of Discovery, Medicinal Plants Down Through the Ages

A living heritage, from yesterday to today

Until the late 19th century, the apothecary was the nerve centre of the Hôtel-Dieu hospitals, and the position of apothecary nun, which covered much more than the production of drugs, was of vital importance. The medical knowledge and know-how passed down by the Augustinian Sisters from one generation to the next – and in particular, the production and administration of drugs – provides a telling illustration of the “hospitaller” vocation of this religious community.

During this workshop, you will discover the care techniques once used by apothecary nuns and still used today by herbalists. You will be able to familiarize yourself with several aspects of their craft, which was designed to care for both the body and soul. You will learn to identify the medicinal plants used by these sisters along with their health-related properties. You’ll discover how the Augustinian Sisters began by importing medicinal plants from Europe and then gradually integrated indigenous plants into their pharmacopeia thanks to their ties to the First Nations.

This workshop will also enable you to understand the apothecary nuns’ contribution to medical herb practices, as well as recent discoveries and empirical observations that shed scientific light on the properties of certain plants.

Finally, you’ll discover how the use of these medicinal plants can improve your quality of life and which plants are of greatest use to you. Thanks to theoretical presentations and practical demonstrations, such as the use of medicinal plants in the preparation of products, you will come away with knowledge that can be easily applied to the benefit of you and your family and friends.
